Getting Started with OER: OpenStax Institutional Partnership Progam 2017-2018

This guide is your one-stop-shop for getting started with OER. You will learn the basics, learn about Creative Commons licensing, where to find OER and how to evaluate it, and what's happening with the University of Hartford's OER Initiative.

OpenStax OER Institutional Partnership Program

The University of Hartford was one of 11 schools nationwide (and the first private institution) accepted into the 2017-2018 OpenStax Institutional Partnership Program. OpenStax, a nonprofit based out of Rice University, is one of the leading providers of OER textbooks, all of which are peer-reviewed and carry a CC-BY license. Through this program, we received individualized guidance and support in order to build a strategic plan to help promote and encourage the use of OER on campus. We were able to do the following with help from this program:

  • Presentations on OER at college and department meetings
  • Learn@Lunch events about OER through the Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation
  • An OER Workshop featuring speakers from the statewide OER initiative
  • The first round of grants for faculty to adopt, adapt, or create their own OER
