In the Allen Library

  1. Open the library catalog.
  2. Search the title and composer's name.
  3. Limit the format to Printed Music, Sound Recordings, or Videos
    (depending on what you need).
  4. Find a catalog record for the piece you need.
  5. Use the location and call number to find it on the shelf.

In the Allen Library, the first letters of the call number indicate format:

Call Number Letters Format
MD CDs
MR LPs (records)
MO DVDs
MV VHS tapes

The following numbers indicate genre. Combine the letters above with the numbers below to browse for piano recordings.

Example: 
MD1010—Piano concerto CDs
MR1010—Piano concerto LPs 

Call Number Genre
20 – 39 Solo piano
217 – 285 Duets with piano
310 – 344 Trios with piano
*see note Quartets through nonets
1010 Piano concertos

*Quartets (400s), quintets (500s), through nonets (900s) follow a pattern similar to trios, e.g. 410-444, 510-544, etc.

Want to listen to higher quality audio equipment? Don't have a record turntable at home? Come to the Allen Library!

Our listening carrels and listening/viewing rooms can play:

  • CDs, LPs, cassette tapes, and reel-to-reel tapes
  • DVDs, Blu-rays, and VHS tapes
  • Personal devices via Bluetooth, VGA, HDMI, AUX cable, and Apple TV

Equipment is generally available on a first-come, first-served basis, but rooms may be reserved for certain uses. Contact Lisa Wollenberg (860.768.4840) for more information.
