Artificial Intelligence: AI: Overview

As you proceed to utilize AI tools to support your educational experience, it is important to maintain a healthy dose of skepticism.  Below are some key points to keep in mind as you proceed with caution.

Creative uses of AI in higher education

  • brainstorming & research inspiration
  • writing & editing                                                 
  • drafting an outline & help with formatting
  • design & visualization
  • coding & software development
  • checking grammar & spelling
  • research & literature review
  • adaptive technology & reading enhancement
  • task management & project tracking
  • virtual tutors/assistants & assignment tracking

 

Common issues

  • hallucinations:                   is the output misleading, or fabricated, or non-existent?       
  • biases:                              is there an implicit or explicit bias present in the tool?           
  • ethically sourced data:     are the content creators being compensated for their work?  
  • outdated information:       are the data sets up to date?                                                  

 

Common concerns

  • environmental impact:         how much energy is the data center using?                        
  • employment:                       are tools taking jobs from industry professionals?               
  • morale:                               is it academically unfair that some students are using AI while others are not?

 

 

 

Using AI responsibly (when permitted)

  • academic integrity:                   are you following your instructor's written AI policy?

 

  • intentionality:                            what are your intentions with using AI tools?

 

  • privacy & confidentiality:          are you keeping your private data safe?

 

  • lateral reading:                         are you verifying all of your sources? 

 

  • copyright:                                 are you giving credit to authors/artists/etc for any original work you have used?
