More Details About the New Layout (For Those Who Want to Know)

  • Is there a drawing/map?
See our Allen Library New Layout (PDF).
Staff are happy to give tours or help you find materials.

  • How did the Allen footprint change?
We broke a hole through Allen's back wall (where Oversize materials were), and moved books to shelving behind Allen (near bound periodicals). Allen’s collections will remain together, in a bigger footprint.

  • Is there still compact mobile shelving?
Most of the compact mobile shelving that held music books and scores was converted to non-moveable shelving with open aisles. They are EASY TO BROWSE now. Some compact mobile carriages were rebuilt in the expanded area behind Allen, in much shorter rows. THEY ARE EASY TO USE. We kept our CD/DVD/mini-scores mobile shelving, since it works.

  • Where did everything go?
    • Dance books: moved to expanded area behind Allen, on mobile shelving in short rows.
    • Music books (ML’s, on music history/biography): moved to expanded area behind Allen, on non-moveable shelving with open aisles, next to music periodicals.
    • Music books (MT’s, on music teaching/technique/theory): stayed in current location, with shelves converted to non-moveable shelving with open aisles.
    • CDs, DVDs, miniature scores: stayed put.
    • LPs: moved to expanded area behind Allen, on mobile shelves in short rows.
    • Oversize materials: moved to new corner in expanded area behind Allen.
    • Reference books: moved to expanded area behind Allen, on mobile shelving.
    • Scores: most stayed on current shelves (converted to non-moveable shelves with open aisles), but M1 to M3 research editions moved to expanded area behind Allen, on mobile shelving. Some other scores will be shifted.
  • Staff are happy to give tours or help you find materials.
