Allen Library Construction Project 2025: Access to Collections & Services

This is a guide to the Allen Library shelving repair, construction, and materials relocation project in January 2025.

What to expect

The Harrison Libraries moved forward to reconfigure the Allen Library footprint and relocate shelving within it. This was needed to create space for heavily used collections that were trapped in broken compact mobile shelving. The new larger footprint keeps materials, staff expertise, and facilities as one contiguous unit.

  • When did this happen?
Wednesday, January 8 through mid February 2025 (with fine tuning continuing afterward).

  • Will the Allen Library stay open?
Allen is open its normal hours. If Allen ever (unexpectedly) needs to close briefly, staff will post notices, and arrange for substitute services.

  • Will Allen course reserves and recording equipment/laptops be available for checkout?
Yes, you are able to check out reserves and equipment.

  • Can we study in Allen, or use the computers, printer, scanner, and rooms when Allen is open?
    All services are available.

  • Can you pull materials for me?
You can freely help yourself, but yes, even though the construction project is over, you can still request materials online via our Library Holds Service. We’ll get the items and set up a pick-up time for you. If you need other accommodations for pick up, you can also reach us by phone (860.768.4491), in person at the Allen front desk, or email Mike Anderson (mianderso@hartford.edu).

  • Can I get materials myself?
Yes! All shelving is open to the public again, and is much easier to use than before the project. People have been delighted!

  • My class is in an Allen Library seminar room. Will we still meet there?
The seminar rooms remain available. Instructors should notify their students if ever they wish to make alternative arrangements.

  • Will tutoring still take place on the lower level of the Harrison Libraries?
The Tutoring Center will indicate if there are changes in hours or location, but at this time we expect the two rooms at the foot of the stairs (lower level Harrison Libraries) to remain in use Spring 2025.

  • What if I have questions or need further assistance?
See our Contacts list in this guide.

We apologize for the inconveniences, and thank everyone for their understanding and forbearance.
